A close up of three different colored quilts

You have decided that you want to start quilting.  Great Decision!  I know that you will “Love†making your first quilt.  And once you get started, I promise you, you won’t be able to give it up and will continue to work on new projects.

Following are a few essential tools to get started on your journey. Future Blogs will provide a thorough breakdown of each section of your best options.

Sewing Machine

If you have a sewing machine, the best thing you can do is have it gone over by a professional to be sure it is oiled and ready to go.  If not, there are good, excellent sewing machines that are easy to use.   There is no need to purchase a top-of-the-line sewing machine when just starting.   Instead, you will find several ideal sewing machines that are reasonably priced and easy to use.

Sewing Machine Needles

The best size for quilting is 90/14. There are several choices, and a good one to start with is the Universal Needle.

Rotary Cutter

There are several choices for rotary cutters.  My choice is 45 millimeters.  I always replace the blade when I start a new project.

Self-healing Cutting Mat

A good size, to begin with, is 18″ x 24″.

Thread

A good all-cotton thread that is 50 wt. in a neutral color is what most quilters use for piecing fabric.

Iron

There are many choices of irons.  I started with a portable iron but changed to a full-size iron which I felt did a better job for me.  It is always good to be able to use steam.

Ironing Board or Wool Ironing Mat

I have the Wool Ironing Mat sitting next to me rather than getting up and down to press each seam. However, you will need a sturdy ironing board when pressing large projects.

Scissors

One good thing that you can do is buy high-quality pair of scissors.  I suggest a smaller pair of scissors that you can use for snipping threads, as I use those more than the regular size.

High-Quality Cotton Quilting Fabric

I cannot emphasize enough that the better the fabric, the better your quilt will look, and for the best results, it should be 100% cotton.

Seam Ripper

Probably not a necessary tool.  However, most quilters use this tool to remove unwanted stitches.

The information I have provided here is an excellent list to get you started on your journey to quilting.  As you continue to quilt, you will find more and more tools to add.
